Ways to still get bright images on a overcast day

Family session in Rogers, Ar

The sun was no where in sight for this fall family session in Rogers, Ar. But that did not stop us from capturing some of the most dreamy images that day. Here are a few tricks for still getting some bright images on a overcast day.

Wardrobe! If you’ve read some other articles from my journal then you are probably familiar with how important i feel wardrobe to be when it comes to your session. Having a light and airy wardrobe is of even more importance on a cloudy and overcast day. Creams and whites specifically can really add some brightness to your image. Here are a some examples of some of my favorite muted tones for a light and airy wardrobe.

Another important thing to consider is location. I’ve preached before in previous journals how important location can be as well in the outcome of your images. And that stays just as important on a sunny or cloudy day. Only difference being on a cloudy day we tend to look for even more open sky than usual. So when it comes to scenery on a cloudy day i tend to look for sky being in a big majority of the background. This can help still give the image that light and airy feel without things getting to dark or heavy. Another option would be to look for white backgrounds. So something like a white wall or pretty white building, that can help bring some brightness to your images as well.

Overall you just have to take a cloudy day for what it is, CLOUDY! While i can not make a beautiful sunny glow appear out of no where, there are some unique qualities a overcast day can give. Like shooting in locations we typically may not be able to. For instance, a wide open spot that offers no open shade can be a little tricky on a sunny day as there is nothing there diffusing the light, but on a overcast day it’s perfection! Also the time of your session changes with a overcast day, which can sometimes be helpful. Instead of shooting close to sunset we would want to push your session time a little earlier to make sure we are getting enough light in your images. And for those with small kiddos and a early bedtime that can sometimes be helpful!
